SPI Lasers celebrated the completion of its new UK manufacturing facility with a grand-opening ceremony on July 6th. Completed in only six months, the new building increases manufacturing space by approximately 40,000 square feet, bringing its total footprint to over 100,000 square feet.
In addition to the expanded production space, the new site includes a new mezzanine floor to accommodate additional offices, product development, training areas, meeting rooms, and a staff commons area.
The ceremony opened with a word from Dr. Christian Schmitz, CEO of Laser Technology for TRUMPF – SPI Lasers’ parent company. SPI staff from across the UK as well as representatives from TRUMPF, Southampton Universities ORC, and Eastleigh Borough Council attended.
SPI Lasers CEO Dr. Mark Greenwood states, “I am delighted to welcome both SPI and TRUMPF colleagues to this significant event in our history. (The opening of our new facility) is a culmination of years of planning to further cement SPI’s vision … (and) will allow us to not only enhance our level of customer service and support but will also ensure we can cater to our growing global customer base.”
As a part of the celebration, attendees were encouraged to wear key colors from the SPI Lasers brand palette (mainly red and black) and make a donation to MIND, the Mental Health charity. In total, $600 (£452) was collected.
With operations kicking into gear, the first lasers are expected to be fully manufactured by August with productivity continuing to ramp up over the course of the next year.
