Cutting luminarias

Try This: Laser Cut Luminaria Bags

Ben Sieber is the senior graphic designer at Epilog Laser.

Luminaria bags are a classic holiday decoration that light up houses and sidewalks. Using a laser system, you can customize these paper bags with a one-of-a-kind design to create a special look for customers.

Materials Needed

  • Luminaria bags, coated or uncoated
  • Small sheet of scrap metal
  • Electric candles or real candles if you’re using a flame-retardant bag
  • Bag of sand or other type of weight

Step One: Design

Download a premade template or create your own design. Use a snowflake shape or any other holiday theme to create a great design that will make the custom luminarias really stand out. (Image 1)

Step Two: Cutting

You only want to cut through one side of the bag. By taking a small piece of scrap anodized aluminum and sliding it inside the bag between the layers, you can easily cut through only one side of the bag. (Image 2) Place the luminaria in the upper right corner of the table and run the design. (Image 3)

Laser Parameters: 60-Watt System

Cutting: Speed: 60%; Power: 15%; Frequency: 500

As each bag is finished, remove the metal sheet and place it in the next bag.

Step Three: Assembly

When you’re done, use a small bag of sand or other type of weight to hold down the bag and place your electric candle inside to create a beautifully lit decoration. (Image 4)
