You may have seen some news about Pantone’s 2017 Color of the Year, Greenery, or the Pantone Spring/Summer 2017 Color Palette. Have you ever wondered how this affects your business? The Pantone Fashion Color Report Spring 2017 edition is a comprehensive overview of fashion designers’ use of color in their upcoming collections. While your business might have nothing to do with apparel, these colors influence far beyond. The color report put out by Pantone isn’t just for the fashion industry—these colors flow through all retail worlds, from wall paint colors, to pillows, home décor for the wall, gifts, and more. This palette is heavy with blue and green tones. The Pantone Spring 2017 colors are:

Greenery, PMS #15-0343 - The 2017 Color of the Year

From the warmth of sunny days with PANTONE 13-0755 Primrose Yellow to the invigorating feeling of breathing fresh mountain air with PANTONE 18-0107 Kale, and the desire to escape to pristine waters with PANTONE 14-4620 Island Paradise, designers applied color in playful, yet thoughtful and precise combinations to fully capture the promises, hope and transformation that we yearn for each spring.”
Greenery, the 2017 Color of the Year, is a tangy bright green that sparks thoughts of growth and flourishing opportunities for the year.
Island Paradise will get you feeling the tropics. It’s an intense, aqua color that when mixed with Greenery might have designs doing the Hula dance.
Lapis Blue is the darkest hue in this set of colors. Noted as a “strong and confident” shade and a great substitute for black in your designs.
Niagara, a true middle tone blue, is calming and feels true. The Pantone report notes, “Niagara is a classic denim-like blue that speaks to our desire for ease and relaxation.”
Kale: while there’s a lot of opinions on the vegetable, Kale as a hue is more of an olive or army green. It can be used in masculine or feminine designs. It’s remindful of the healthy and outdoor lifestyles that more people are enjoying and find appealing in today’s world, especially in the warmer months of the year.
Primrose Yellow—there’s no other color to describe this hue; it’s not a green-yellow or a golden tone. It’s evocative of a fresh yellow crayon. This yellow tone implies joyful times, sunshine-filled days and excitement.
Pink Yarrow will have you dancing in the streets to steel drums—a festive and dark magenta shade. Add this as an accent using any two other colors, or for a real punch, use this as your main color and another as an accent color.
Hazelnut is more of a khaki color. Typically I think of the darker side of the actual nut, but this seems to be pulled from the lighter areas of it. A neutral color to balance out the bright colors, it pairs well with any of the colors in the palette.
Flame: it’s orange, a bright, strong, exciting orange with red undertones. It’s flamboyant and fun. The hue value is on the same wave length as Pink Yarrow.
Pale Dogwood is the lightest hue in this palette. It’s a pale pink that reminds me of the lighter pink shades from the Dogwood tree flower blooms.
There is clear split among the palette between the stronger, more vibrant colors and the lighter, brighter tones. Take a current design and change the colors to ones from this palette to freshen up a pressed product design, or download new designs for specific markets and holidays from the Unisub free graphics library.
When using these colors, you can reference the RGB formula shown next to the color, or if you have any Adobe software, download a ASE from Pantone’s website to load into the color swatches of Adobe Illustrator, InDesign or Photoshop. Use the RGB formulas to change colors in designs for products, then run a color test on scrap material, pressing the colors to see how they look and match what you see in the palette, then further adjust the color formulas from there.
