People often think that they should set their fume extractors on maximum airflow. The thinking is that more airflow equals better results. This is an over simplification. Actually, filtered fume extraction works best by applying the Goldilocks principle: the airflow must be set within optimal margins as opposed to the extremes. Too little airflow, and fumes will escape from the laser enclosure. Too much airflow and the activated carbon filter will be consumed prematurely and energy will be wasted. Systematically find the right airflow setting that will just keep the fumes contained in the laser enclosure and then increase it slightly from there. This ensures longer filter life, energy efficiency, and of course, effective odor and fume reduction.
