Once you have chosen a name for your business, check if it’s trademarked or currently in use. To check if the name is in use, go to the Secretary of State in your state, and most of the time the lookup is free of charge. If it isn’t in use, register it. As an example, if you choose to be a sole proprietor, you should register your business name with either the state or county clerk. If one incorporates as an LLC or S Corporation, they typically register their business name when the paperwork is filed.
Remember as you are choosing a name for your business to check if that domain name is available as well. Even if you don’t think you will start a website immediately, as your business grows, you want to have that option. Be sure to register your domain name when you register for your business name.
