Color Filling Wood

Adding color to laser engraved wood can add some real bling and contrast to enhance an engraving project. In a production engraving environment, the idea is to keep the color-filling process simple and reliable.
Start by applying an inexpensive car wax to the wood item. The wax will create a thin barrier and help in the final wipe-off step.
An important key to the color-filling process is to get the engraving depth correct. The ideal depth is .025 - .030 of an inch. Adjust the power and speed of your laser to achieve the correct depth using some scrap wood. Use a digital micrometer or the wire of a heavy-duty paper clip to measure the engraving depth. If the engraving is too deep, the color may bleed into the grain of the wood. If the engraving is too shallow, the paint will not stay in during the final wipe-off step.
After engraving the wood, do not wipe off the smoke residue. If the engraved area gets wet, it will allow the color to bleed into the grain of the wood.
The next step is to add the color. Using the correct color-fill material is critical. LaserBits Pro Color Fill is acrylic based and contains a special polymer that eliminates bleeding in to the grain of the wood. Use the tip of the Pro Color Fill to work the color into the engraved area.
While the color is still wet, wipe off the excess. The wipe-off process works best with light pressure and multiple passes with a soft, dry cloth.
The Pro Color will skin and dry quickly. Remove any leftover color or smoke residue with a damp cloth.
The same color-filling process can be applied to engraving plastic and acrylic as well. Take the time to practice on some scrap materials to fine tune the process.
