6 Tips for Rotary Engraving

glass etching

  1. Make sure to use cutting fluid or some form of lubricant when etching glass to keep the silica from becoming airborne. Silica can be toxic to the lungs if inhaled, so you should never engrave glass dry.
  2. Keep the rotary motor at a relatively low speed when engraving plastic to keep the material from absorbing too much heat and melting during engraving.
  3. Replace diamond engraver tips on a regular basis (at least every 3 months) to maintain high-quality engraving results. Sharp diamond tips ensure details will be consistently crisp and readable, even on the smallest of items.
  4. To create a more burnished look on metals, use the rotary motor at a speed of 7. The rotary action will create additional facets in the engraving and will reflect more light.
  5. Remember to determine the diameter of a cylindrical piece before securing it in the machine. You want to make sure to enter the correct diameter into the software according to English or Metric, depending on which unit of measurement the machine is set to.
  6. When setting parameters for engraving on the inside of a ring, make sure to set your points between any existing stamps. For example, if you set a height fill, double check the length of the engraving to make sure the inscription isn’t overlapping a 14K marking.
