Q&A

Question

I am looking to implement a CO2 laser engraver into our Technology Ed program. We have been researching but haven't found any offerings that have open ends. We would like to be able to slide larger pieces of student projects like a plank from a headboard into the cabinet. Any suggestions on companies, etc.?

Answer

Most laser manufacturers have the ability to have remove the front panel, which allows you the ability to laser larger pieces. But, what you are asking for is known as a Class 4 laser. This class of laser is intended for manufacturing facilities which require the ability to laser engrave long continuous pieces. Be aware that a Class 4 laser is intended to be contained in its own room, due to the risk of the laser beam being directed outside the cabinet.

We run an 18x24 Epilog laser in our High School Graphics lab and have had great success for over 4 years now. While Epilog only offers a removable front panel, Universal Laser offers a 24x36 CO2 with *pass-through* sides AND a removable front. This unit permits a plank 20" wide to pass completely through the machine:

dbrunger,

Have you heard of AP-Lazer? We are located in Lansing, MI and manufacture class 4 laser machines. We are a child company of a wholesale granite distributor - we offer in-house laser etchings on the monuments we sell our customers. A few years ago, we began manufacturing laser machines with not only open ends, but also a removable top. Unlike the traditional 'boxed-up' laser machines, the removable top allows for engraving just about anything, because you can slide objects directly below. Front and back ends are open. You can even remove the laser top and laser etch directly on top of objects such as floors. In the past, we etched a 5 ft x 3 ft granite monument using that technique. You can visit our website, www.aplazer.com and see if that's something you are looking for.
